Five Ways To Make Google Love
Your Website
Website owners want to
be ranked high in Google. They know if they are ranked on the
first page of search results, they stand a better change of getting
more traffic to their website.
Consider:
* The majority of all Internet search engine
users choose Google (followed by Yahoo and MSN).
* In all, Google, Yahoo and MSN gain 95% of all Internet searches.
* Six of 10 search engine users never go past the first page of
search results (the Top 10).
* Nine of 10 search engine users never go past the third page
of search results (30 results).
Therefore, it's easy to see why it's important
for your website to be ranked high in search engines.
How can you do it?
Here are some ways to attract Google to your
site:
1. Write fresh content.
A website is not a brochure you create once and
forget about it. Even brochures get stale after awhile. Always
change and update your website with fresh content and new information.
Some ideas for fresh content include press releases;
articles about your company and its products; help your potential
customers solve a problem; articles about your community and events;
clips and news about your employees and staff.
Get your employees involved and let them write
articles. See if a vendor or a customer would like to write an
article.
2. Create a Blog.
A blog is an online diary of sorts (and it helps
with the idea of creating fresh content). You can write about
anything in your blog: you, your company, your industry, your
competition, the weather, sports. If you start a blog, you should
be avid about writing something in your blog at least 2-3 times
a week (some write in their blog every day!).
3. Start Building Links.
Link building (also called "back links")
is very important in a search engine optimization program. Linking
is the process of getting other websites to publish a link on
their website pointing to your website.
Trading links (also called reciprocal links)
is also a good idea, but when done in moderation. Trade links
with someone in your industry, or with someone whom you have a
professional relationship with. Don't trade links for the sake
of trading links. After all, no one is attracted to a page of
links.
How do you get links? While you can ask for someone
for a link, the best way is to earn the link. Make your site attractive,
important and rich with information. Then, when you ask for the
link, it will be an easy "yes!"
4. Create sitemaps.
A sitemap is a roadmap which helps your visitors
find pages and information on your website. You can create a simple,
text sitemap by creating a webpage containing all of the links
to the other pages on your site.
You can also create sitemaps specific for Google
and Yahoo. They are not viewable by visitors to your site - only
by the search engines themselves. Online software is available,
for free, to help you create these types of sitemaps.
5. Write Code.
Make sure each page of your website has a strong
Page Title, Page Description and Keywords. The HTML code is present
on each page.
Page Titles need to be more than "Welcome
to ABC Company". If your company sells snow shovels, your
page title should say "Snow Shovels & Snow Safety Information".
You don't necessarily need to put the name of your company into
the page title. Limit your titles to 60 characters.
Your Page Descriptions need to be unique for
each page and accurately describe the page. Don't write one page
description and copy and paste it to every page. Limit your page
descriptions to 256 characters.
The Keyword section is starting to gain more
attention from search engines. Use them. List your keywords, using
upper and lower case letters. Limit your keywords to 256 characters.
(Personal note: I can't tell you how many websites list 100 keywords,
including obscure keywords and misspelled keywords. Spend your
time on the 6-12 important keywords for your site).
Follow the five steps and, chances are,
you'll not only get more attention from Google but you'll notice
more traffic in general from prospects, vendors and clients.
